Road Trip with Great Results! Chanty town...

Recommended Posts

I just got back from a road trip to Delaware/Pennsylvania and on my way back to Florida, I drove through the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. I stopped to visit a friend and right on his property we hit the jackpot on chanterelles. He had lots of cool stuff growing there and I sure wish I'd had more time there to explore the fungi. Here are some pics from the ultimate chanterelle pick.

Those are some really large Smooth Chants. I rarely see them this large and this clean up here in PA. They may get very large if allowed to grow in-situ for several weeks. But this means they will endure lots of rainfall and usually a few heavy gully-washers that douse them in dirty runoff. Karen and I, a friend, gathered about 5 pounds of prime chants on Saturday. It got kinda late and we were tired before we even reached the known sweet spot! I'll post a photo later.

Red Amanita is likely A. parcivolvata.

Coral-like one is possibly Tremellodendron pallidum. I've seen lots of this up here lately.

I examined a small Ascomycete the other day that looks like the red cup. Ribbed underneath? I couldn't find an ID to match the one I brought home.

Brown Amanita is likely A. amerifulva (previously A. fulva). The cap color and brown stains on the volva match this species.

I think the polypore is Meripilus sumstinei, Black-staining Polypore.

Sometimes a 10 mile road trip is all it takes. Summer t-storms often produce variable amounts of rainfall every few miles. The past 3 weeks or so there's been less rainfall in my backyard than areas just to the northwest. A real good spot for chants and trumpets near my home has yet to produce any. But a 15 minute drive last Saturday resulted in...

There are a few classic chants mixed in with the smoothies. I got those the day before in a different area. Can you spot them? A friend who came along with us also harvested about as many chants as is seen in one bowl. Most of the chants were found in patches under oak and/or hickory in open areas in a south-facing mature forest. Trumpets are just getting started here. Same sort of habitat, but usually I don't find both chants and trumpets in the same patch.

Also found some nice Boletus separans (Xanthoconium separans).

And plenty of stuff to bring home for study... or for submission for research.

Correct on all the ID's, Dave. Sorry, first day back and had lots to do this morning so was in a bit of a hurry. Nice collection you have there also! I just made a corn and chanterelle chowder with sweet corn I bought in SC and some of these chants. It came out super!

I sauteed and froze several packs of chants. But I withheld over a pound of the nicest ones and made a chanterelle Bechamel sauce to take to a pot-luck party. The person throwing the party had boned/stuffed/grill-roasted two chickens. Talk about a match made in food heaven!

Oh... and those whitish Amanitas you posted... as you well know... Destrying Angels! (Amanita bisporigera)

Great finds Mary and Dave! Both of you are wetting my appetite. I am headed over to northern Minnesota in 10 days for about 10 days. It has been very cool this year and I expect the chants to still be out in force. My main quest, however, is for lobsters, chaga and king boletes.
