Mushrooms while out hunting

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen many mushrooms or birds for that matter, but have seen a few. Other than the chaga I found today I really don't know what they are. Yesterdays find on a stump was a surprise, I didn't expect to see any healthy mushrooms after the recent cold weather and snow. The chaga I noticed today from some distance. It was odd shaped and sticking out from the tree. After putting it in my game bag I noticed how many birch trees were in the area. Arriving at the car with an hour of daylight left I decided to cruise the mountain top and take a closer look at some of the birch trees and it paid off.

I found this last week. I thought the pattern on the cap was unusual.

These were out yesterday and caught my interest, although I haven't had time to try to identify them.

I noticed this chaga from about 50 meters.

This was a nice find and right along the road.

Mushrooms look like Hypholoma. Lots of leaves of deciduous trees in the photos, so maybe H. lateritium? Nice Chaga.

I think the mushroom season here in NE PA may be drawing to a close. Looks like maybe an early arrival of winter in imminent. Pretty soon I may be skiing on the trails where I look for mushrooms.

I considered keeping a few for spore prints, but had a long hike up the mountain that distracted me. I forgot about brick tops. I found some last fall and read that they were good edibles. These were past prime anyhow. I'll have to keep my eye out for some more. I was hoping to have a meal with some wild birds and some wild mushrooms, yet haven't been able to provide. Perhaps there's a chance still.

I drink three cups of chaga a day. That is what the experts recommend. My wife drinks it straight but I always doctor it with a green or white tea and a bit a stevia. I have been drinking it for two years and have had very good results. You can still get a cold but the duration is very short. Having had prostrate cancer in the past, I also drink it for a cancer preventative. I collected quite a bit of it in Minnesota this past summer. I am planning a trip back to that area next summer. I have quite a few birch trees with chaga marked off on my GPS. These had chaga that was out of reach. I plan of bringing a step stool next year to harvest from these trees.
