How often do Maitake fruit?

Old Oak

Recommended Posts

i think it depends on the fungus and the environment. the big OLD oak i checked on yesterday has 3 new hens growing one above ground and 2 just now erupting from the soil. i took 4 off it about 3 or 4 weeks ago. my problem is it in an old cemetary ( they dont treat the grass with chemicals, i checked) and i dont know when they will mow again. i harvested the others when they were small as i knew the grass was tall and mowers were coming. i guess i will take my chances. my advice is to keep checking, cant hurt!

We have had a double flush in Ohio strangely, as some fruited in mid August, and then the same trees have fruied again late September going into October, weather weather weather. Odd year here.

Here's the first and third Hen's I found near the same Red Oak this year. (Somebody else got the second one.) The big one weighed 8.3 Lbs. I harvested it yesterday, 11/2. This is the latest non-rotting Hen I have ever found! Leaving the cyberworld as soon as the pics post to prepare Italian-style Grifola.

we got a late start here in Illinois. never have found good hens in Nov before! haven't had too many hard frost and leaves on trees helps protect them. thats all changed this past weekend. think we're done, but i'll still take a look too.

Harvested my first November hen in SW Ohio near Dayton yesterday, we have had the cold, the freeze and odd weather so I let this one grow for over 2 weeks on my late hitting trees and flushed last year Oct. 5. It is about done for hens in Ohio but so much more to be found still.
