troutddicted
Started this year so I don't have field experience. I harvested two small chunks in the summer and it seemed harder to take off the birch than the pieces I harvested this fall. Is there a seasonal variation as to how easy chaga comes off? I've also noticed that the fall harvested chaga seem to be a bit more spongy ( near the area adjacent to the tree ) whereas the summer ones were hard as a rock. All pieces came from different trees ( all alive ) in the same geographical area and all are of similar size - I've got competition in the area and its only small pieces for me. Dave W
I think the hardness varies with moisture content and/or age. I usually knock off pieces with a rock or the flat backside of an ax. I find all of my Chaga on Yellow Birch.
