John Smalldridge
Dave, is it possible for you to put a post up describing how you collect and store herbarium collections. Also the importance of herbarium collections.
Dave W
Well, I don't put a lot of effort into maintaining an hebarium. Most of what I collect for study is earmarked to be sent to some researcher, or to some established herbarium. I send some material to the New Jersey Mycological Association to be stored int heir herbarium. I dehydrate all materials in a homemade contraption that uses two 75-watt light bulbs (made by a friend who works with sheet metal). I'll post pics of it later... Actually, there are already a few pics hidden away on this board. Some dried stuff never makes it out of my house. I store individually inside plastic zip-lock sandwich bags that are kept in cardboard boxes. I post any stored or submitted material on Mushroom Observer, and label the collection with the MO observation number.
John Smalldridge
Thanks. Where would we find a list of people would like material to study.
Dave W
Good question...I don't know. I meet people on Mushroom Observer who seek material. Michael Kuo is currently studying genus Leccinum. Rod Tulloss is always looking for good Amanita material. Currently he's interested in section Vaginatae.
