Dave W
These tiny False Earth Stars --probably Astraeus hygrometricus-- looked like minuscule white balls on the ground. They probably fruited months ago. These Clitocybe mushrooms likely popped during the last few days. In the past, I have found Clitocybes during periods of thaw. But it's still a surprise to find these terrestrial mushrooms after two snowfalls and several mornings with temps in the low teensF. Probably poisonous. Dave W
Ha! Posted these at Mushroom Observer just a few minutes ago, and already I am informed the little stars are not A. hygrometricus. In fact they apparnently aren't even Astraeus. These are true Earth Stars (Geastrum as opposed to Astraeum). http://mushroomobserver.org/194121?q=2Q4GH
SalemScott
Very cool Dave! I've seen tiny puff balls but nothing with a base like that. Thanks for sharing.
4rum
Seen them, just never LOOKED at them (the earthstars). I'm anxious to find some now to take a closer look.
Dave W
These were real small. The "star" bases were buried, so all I actually spotted were the tiny white spore sacs... maybe 2-3 mm wide.
