12-17-14 Went out again today with the intent of finding Oyster Mushrooms for dinner. I harvested a large bag pretty full. I'm guessing well over 4 pounds. I'm including photos of the nicest cluster. I sliced them, chopped a little since they were HUGE, shook in a bag of flour and spices and seasonings and browned in a skillet of butter. Sooooooo good!

Dave they were near perfect. Fresh, clean and I didn't find any bugs. These were on the same poplar where I found the brown mushroom posted on MO. There are over a dozen large poplars down in a small area. Every one of them have oysters on them. I should take photos of the ones I missed. So many have already 'melted'. If found sooner and kept picked there would have been bushels.

Those brown funnels are apparently the same species as the ones in this post. Just a different growth form due to position from which they fruited.

I have seen massive Oyster fruitings, but not since many years back. I remember one autumn when I could have harvested bushels off of dead beech. Since that year I have seen very few on beech. Mushrooms can be very mysterious. One year --maybe 2002 or 3-- I collected well over 5 pounds of Tricholoma equestre from under only a few White Pines on my property. Since that year I have seen a total of maybe 3 of these mushrooms in the same spots. And I regularly check all the areas on my 4 acres.

May have noted, a few years back we had a derecho (straight line or wall wind like a tornado) move through. We have large areas of forest on the ground all around me, lots of poplar. I think conditions are just right, right now. I don't expect I'll ever harvest this many oysters in the future. I've certainly enjoyed these though. They're delicious!
