ChefsWild
I was very happy to bring home a ten pound hen today which I shared with friends. Less happy when I started cleaning it and the fire ants came out and raised some uncomfortable welts on my arm before I managed to get them corralled in the sink. Tasty mushroom, but ow. It still hurts. Other foragers be warned.
Scott C
Ouch, I have never had that issue but a garter snake slithered out from one last year in one of my in the grass of a park spots where an oak stood many years ago and the sclerotium still survive, I presume from the roots of other oaks nearby. Many just pill bugs and this year, the beetles were an issue on some of the many I harvested. Big ones not like the tiny oyster beetles... ChefsWild
I would be doubly happy to find a hen with a pretty snake inside. The one downside is that if you scare a Thamnophis, it may musk, and that would not be tasty on your mushroom. The smell is pretty whiffy. Be gentle with any garter snakes you find around good edible mushrooms.
