ChefsWild
I've been studying assiduously to learn the 'bad' as well as the 'good' mushrooms so I can recognize and avoid them. Currently my protocol for carrying an unknown one home to spore print is to seal it off in a bag with a paper towel so no potentially toxic material gets mixed up with my known edibles, but I understand there are a few mushrooms that grow locally that I wouldn't even want to carry home due to them being illegal to possess. No idea how common they are or how to recognize them. Though if they are those tee-tiny things with spindly stalks I keep seeing, I don't care much about differentiating them because they can't be confused with anything worth gathering as an edible. If it doesn't look like it might be yummy, I can safely ignore it, eg, if it's a tiny spindly thing. What common toxic species should I be focusing on learning in this area? There are a ton of amanitas that I avoid (except for A. jacksonii, which is very tasty and not too difficult to iD), and I've seen Russula emetica, but there are certainly other baddies that I don't well recognize yet. Thanks for a point in the right direction! Suggestions of books, sites, etc, also very welcome.
John Smalldridge
Chefs. You might want to go to mushroom observer website and do a search by state to see what others have documented in N.C.
